Outfitters monopoly of sites
Is it just the group that I paddle with in the San Juans or have others been turned away from the Marine Trail sites by outfitters? This has happened numerous times to us. They seem to get to the sites early, put up one tent on each site and then turn everyone else away.
Last weekend we made it to Jones Island by about 3 PM to find the Marine Trail site full to overflowing with a single commercial training group. Every other camp site on the island was vacant.
Isn't there a limit as to how many people/boats can occupy that site? Is there any code of courtesy or set of rules that the outfitters must adhere to in order to use the sites?

Re: Outfitters monopoly of sites
8/20/10 Windy day. Paddled from Lummi to Pt. Doughty Arrived about 4 PM. Little beach stacked full of kayaks. Two groups from Camp Orkila (one planned, one diverted due to weather). Three camp sites. Already 30 people. After a discussion of WWTA they vacated 'cooking camp' and made room for us. 8:00 PM, 2 doubles showed up from Friday Harbour. Campers told them the place was full. We overheard and told them we would make room as there was no safe alternate destination. 3 sites, 8 person limit = 24. Watertrails stake near stairs, NO information on reader board.
