Fort Worden State Park

Take a walk along the 11,000 feet of beach or hike up the bluffs to take in a bird’s-eye view at the entrance to Puget Sound. Be sure to take a flashlight and explore the haunted house-like maze of the underground passageways. Port Townsend is a popular destination and the park hosts many conferences. Former home of the West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium.

Approach: Easy sandy beach

Location: Fort Worden State Park is located north of downtown Port Townsend. The Cascadia Marine Trail site is located just south of the pier on the beach below the main fort area.

Hazards: Currents north of Point Wilson are potentially dangerous; use caution and check current tables. Ferries cross from Fort Casey to Port Townsend.

Sanitation: Toilets opposite of pier and showers at campground; open year-round

Extras: Picnic areas, food concessions in day-use area and Marine Science Center

Fees: $14/night for up to 8 in site

Special Considerations: Very popular day-use beach.

Natural History: Mingle with inter-tidal plants and animals indigenous to Puget Sound at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. The Marine Exhibit at the end of the pier houses touch pools and aquaria highlighting local marine habitats. On shore, the Natural History Exhibit highlights aspects of the shoreline, including a 12 foot model of a Puget Sound bluff.

  1. The site is a little hard to find- about 500 feet south of the pier near the picnic table and small white post. This site is not very private- a road is on one side and a sandy beach on the other. There is no clear way to pay for the water trail site, so you need to fill out an envelope with the $14. This is more expensive than some other Washington State Parks trail sites.
