Natural History: Posey Island is flat and sandy, covered with beach grass, brush and a few small scrubby trees, making for a picturesque beach scene. During the summer, the island can be covered with wildflowers. Historically, the spot was a destination for people wanting to picnic and pick bouquets, or “posies.” The island was originally thought to be a part of Pearl Island, and was called Spit Point. Local people, however, knowing better, called it Posey Island. The name stuck and has now been adopted for wider use.
