About

Who We Are & Why We’re Needed

Washington Water Trails Association (download our brochure) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, founded in 1990 by forward-looking individuals who realized that access to Washington’s shorelines were shrinking. The focus of Washington Water Trails Association (WWTA) work is two-fold: to advocate for the right of public access to and from waterways and to steward those waterways, salt- and fresh-water, and adjoining shore lands. By taking an active role in easing pressures with different communities — along water trails in Washington State — WWTA collaborates with all stakeholders to advocate for safe and legal overnight campsites and day-use parks, launch sites, and beaches.

WWTA partners with federal, state, county, and city land managers, grassroots groups, businesses, private land owners, and other non profits to promote healthier communities through outdoor education and environmental conservation. WWTA members believe, by coordinating volunteers in stewardship, that we can all make public water access a reality for everyone.

Washington’s tidelands and beaches are not all in public ownership. Public access is available at approximately 30 percent of the state’s shorelines. As part of our community, you are an important partner in helping to preserve public access along our waterways. Become a member, have your business become a sponsor, or have your organization partner with WWTA to engage with others who are interested in protecting, conserving, and promoting public access.

Our Mission

Through advocacy, education, and stewardship, Washington Water Trails Association protects and promotes public access to Washington waterways, shorelines, and marine trails for human-powered watercraft. With our efforts, we want to inspire current and future generations to enjoy and take a greater role in protecting our water ways, and ensuring public access.
